Sensitive Issue ahead...
Hmm...here I am again..."wasting" my previous sleeping time to do assignments AGAIN! Sobz...
Assignment Topic: Discuss one thing you would like to include in a preschool that has not been applied now in Spore preschools. Well, my topic is to discuss abt including the issue of gay/lesbian(GL) to preschoolers (4-6yrs old children).
*Sensitive topic....so pls do not read on if you feel uncomfortable with GL issues*
Oh boi...I have been doing my research and asking ard my friends and colleagues who have young kids of their own if they support or oppose to the above move. Frankly, I'm a little disappointed that 99% told me a straight "No" and this topic is soooo sensitive that, trust me, some ended up pretty agitated! kekeke....dats cool as this would allow me to think abt the issues and problems that I might face in real life when these are the parents of my students...I can feel the HEAT right there and then, man! kekkee....interesting.....
Many problems that popped up include - the child is too young to understand this issue, the parents will question if the teacher is GL, will the children be made to think that GL are right, will this clash with religious teachings and morals & values...etc etc...right to the point that parents will think the school is agreeing with GL and thus cultivating young children to mislead themselves into becoming GL in future.
However, my point is...if I am a teacher and say in 10yrs time whereby spore might legalise GL marriage and thus there might be a GL couple who can now adopt/have children of their own, where does these children come in? Will the society be taught to alienate them (the child of GL parents) or should we cultivate an open mind to accept them for who there are but at the same time, taught to hold our own beliefs and thinking. If I'm a Catholic who do not believe in GL, can we teach our child to accept GL for who they are but hold on to our belief that GL is something I would not turn to? Afterall, GL does exist in our world. So, wat better way than for schools to introduce them to this existence rather than having them finding out abt ir in a misguided way when they chance upon it in future?
Sometimes, by allowing oneself to be involved in too much of one thing tends to shut our minds to others. Just like if man have never travelled, we will not allow ourselves to think that the world is round. Afterall, our world will still be wat we think it is without the existence of technology...
